The Higher Passion Wrestling (HPW) Underground Championship is a backyard wrestling Hardcore Championship as recognized by Higher Passion Wrestling. It was first awarded on September 3, 2011 to RPK.

BackgroundEdit

The history of the HPW Underground Championship starts with the HTR Underground Championship. HTR was a federation that ran between early 2008 to early 2009. When HTR closed, UWE started in it's place, run by James "Grimm" Blackwell. Blackwell debuted the UWE Underground Championship at it's event "Open Wounds". UWE eventually closed in June 2010 with only one match contested for the Underground Title. Throughout the history of the two titles that preceded it, Paul Steel was the most prominent holder of the title. After UWE's last event, Sean Steel announced Higher Passion Wrestling for 2011. When the federation started, no announcements were made for the Underground Championship. Then, when Skull Jr. and RPK confirmed themselves for HPW's show "Homecoming" on September 3, RPK was booked against Moustapha Akkad for the new HPW Underground Championship. RPK, a wrestler for Total Hardcore Wrestling and the Michigan Wrestling Association, won the Title, leaving the belt outside of HPW. One month later at "HPW/NBYWA 7: Hell-O-Ween", RPK lost the title to Cody Douglas. Cody's reign ended on March 22, 2012 when HPW announced on their new website that both HPW belts were vacated. Moustapha Akkad defeated DP Mudder and surprise entrant El Chupacabre on April 7 at "First Blood" to win the vacant belt. After over a year of not being featured, on July 7, 2013 at "Backyard Brawl", Paul Steel booked a title match. Akkad defended his championship against Josh Jade, Bill Pritchard, and El Chupacabre in a Battle Royal. El Chupacabre came out victorious as the new champion. On August 3 at "Dirty Hot Summer", Reaper was offered a title shot at the top of the show but refused. El Chupacabre instead defended against Josh Jade. Jade won the match due to a fast count by referee James Blackwell. Reaper came out shortly after Jade won the title, demanding the shot offered to him earlier. Blackwell, given power as the referee by HPW CEO Paul Steel, booked the impromptu match and Reaper came out victorious as the new Underground Champion. The title was not defended at "Labor Day Bash" in September. On October 26 at "Hell-O-Ween", Sean Steel (with the rest of the newly-christened TNT) announced that Reaper had been stripped of the Underground Title. No new champion was determined that night.
